Goddess Hekate has so many aspects, she is goddess of Crossroads, Bearer of Keys, Serpent of Change, Fiery Rose, goddess of Earth, Sky and Sea. She is aligned to the Dark Moon and Witchcraft in more modern times and childbirth and thresholds in ancient times. Whilst she is most often associated with Greek mythos, her oldest known temple is in Lagina, Turkey......she is many things to many folk and how she appears for you, how she works, guides and supports you may be different from how I see her. Our relationship with the goddess is cultivated through knowing her personally and also by knowing ourselves.

My work with goddess Hekate has taken me to the very depths of my inner world, a journey through pain, trauma, isolation and confrontation of my shadows and also to deeply euphoric places of joy. It has been a dedicated commitment that I have never taken lightly and she still journeys with me and guides me all these years later because of this. Getting to know deity, guides, guardians and ancestors takes time and our relationship with them changes as we do, it is worth putting in the time and effort to cultivate these relationships for they truly do support us to become receptive to hidden aspects of ourselves as well as being open to the wisdom and knowledge that is being in-parted to us.
Hekate features in my Online Temple of the Rose Goddesses, we are working with her next week as we celebrate her annual Rite of Her Sacred Fires held each year on the May Full Moon, she is being honoured in my upcoming full days in-person immersion in the Northern Rivers: Hekate Fiery Rose of Winter and she often appears for my clients in my Rose Healing Sessions. She is never far away. See links at the end of this post if you are interested in these offerings.
Hekate is here to guide us through the depths of the cooler darker months in the Southern Hemisphere but she is always present in illuminated forms of protection as we navigate the roads of transformation:
“Star-coursing heavenly, torch-bearer, fire-breather, woman four-faced, four-named, four-roads’ mistress” (PGM – Greek Magickal Papyri).
Through Hekate the Rose and the Serpent flow, and are the instruments of profound change within my work both personal and with my students, clients and priestesses, guiding through the transitions that support us to rebirth through each stage of our growth. She is depicted with serpents often:
“She who is crowned with oak leaves and the coils of wild serpents.” The Root Cutters (Sophocles)
“snake-girdled and the three-headed” and “the She-serpent” (Chaldean Oracles)
And as the Fiery Rose in Fragments 37 and 42.

The Path of the Rose, of the Serpent, is one of evolutionary growth as we embrace the changes both subtle and obvious that are here to guide us through the shedding and wilting process, as the layers of all that no longer serves us peels and fall away, through the letting go of preconceived ideas of what we should be and instead allow surrender to who we truly are. Through societal, familial and cultural influences we are formed at a young age into versions of ourselves that are 'acceptable' to others. And so, it is the Unbecoming that matters most and when we have navigated that we may then focus on the re-fueling and re-filling of the empty spaces, drawing in that which truly nourishes us and supports the way forward into a deeper sense of acceptance of our gifts and how we wish to show up for ourselves and our lives.
As the Moon flows into her Dark Phase, her true phase without the illumination of the Sun, we have an opportunity to turn within to our own dark truths and to rekindle the spark of energetic wisdom that lays within us. We may reach out at this time to Hekate to support this process and allow her to guide us with her Rose and Serpent Medicine for both are also linked to fire in her ancient mythos.
